Divorce rate in Australia

divorce rate Australia

A falling divorce rate has become a feature in recent years.  In America, the divorce rate was increasing until just before the internet entered our lives and has been falling since that time.

The divorce rate (divorces per 1,000 of Australian residents) increased in the 1960s and 1970s and peaked at 4.6 per 1,000 of the resident population after the introduction of the Family Law Act 1975 (Cth), which came into effect in January 1976, allowing no-fault divorce.

The divorce rate has fallen in the 2000s. In 2016 it was 1.9 per 1,000 of the resident population, the lowest rate since 1976. Refer Australian Institute of Family Studies

It maybe that the decline in the divorce rate in Australia is related to the advent of the internet and internet dating. It seems that digital dating may offer better outcomes for many people. Research in the United States shows that marriages between people who meet online are likely to last longer than for couples who meet offline with couples who meet online claiming to be happier than couples who  meet offline.  Perhaps this is not surprising when online dating allows people to be much more specific about what they want in a mate than can be possible when meeting a partner in a more traditional way. Digital dating does allow people an efficient way to find a mate and removes a lot of the uncertainty involved in socialising out there in the offline world trying to meet a mate.
